The First Crate and Barrel store opened in Chicago’s Old town neighborhood in a renovated space in an old elevator factory. The young husband –and wife team of Gordon and Carole Segal set up shop with all the contemporary house wares they were discovering in Europe. The idea was to go directly to the European factories and artists’ workshops. By skipping the middlemen, they could offer these wonderfully simple designs at wonderfully simple, affordable prices.
